Wagon - Sound Art Open Call 2012 Presented by The Substation For his work at The Substation in September 2012, sound artist Joel Ong will create a kinetic sculpture that draws its inspiration from both the visual and sonic aesthetics of the engine. The project builds on the historical, social and cultural significance of the engine, particularly on its acoustic refrain within a lineage of iconic soundmarks that are reminiscent of the age of modernism. As an installation, it allows sound to become a gateway to multiple narratives by introducing and engineering full-frequency sound, infrasonic vibrations and interactive elements. In so doing, the act of listening becomes less of a sidelined activity and more of a focused presence that demands its own time and space. For more information: www.substation.org/opencall
