Description

Small Town Glory is a novella from first time author Eli Godbolt. With a video camera in his hand and the haunting images in his head of a friend being pulled from a glacial river, Eli sets off to film a documentary and, in the process, unearths harrowing truths about life in a small town. Eli, a senior at Millbury High School, lives in a cramped town where first names are known, secrets are scarce, and tragedies strike everyone with equal force. He is kept awake at night by thoughts of Bobby O'Shaye, the police chief's son who abused Eli's sister five years ago. He carries the weight of his sister's attack, his father's distance and drinking habits, and his mother's possible cancer on his shoulders. During a dusty afternoon walk on the bridge, he happens upon the Millbury police as they pull the bloated body of Scotty Charleston, a classmate of Eli's, from the river. The shock of the event prompts Eli and his group of friends to film a documentary as a way to make sense of the sorrow they feel. The boys film people in Millbury who have been close to death, which proves to be a daunting task for Eli, who must make shocking discoveries about the nature of humanity and himself.
