Description

Chicago Fire beat the New York Red Bulls 3-1 in the MLS, but did it despite some dreadful work from the officials at 0:27 (GOOD CLOSE-UP AND REPLAY). With the scores locked at 1-1, Dominic Oduro's shot for Chicago had crossed the line by a yard before Wilman Conde could clear it, but the referee awarded a corner. Replays show another case for goalline technology. New York had travelled to Chicago hoping to move to within a point of the summit of the Eastern Conference in the MLS. They made a pretty bad start. Chicago's Ghanaian striker Patrick Nyarko putting the home side in front after just four minutes. But the visitors began the second half rejuvented, and their attacking play paid off ten minutes in. Dax McCarty racing into the box to meet Mehdi Ballouchy's corner to level the scores. After Chicago were cruelly denied a second goal by the referees, a clever one-two in their opponents' area saw Gonzalo Segares fire emphatically into the roof of the net, leaving no doubt that the ball crossed the line. Ten minutes from time, Chicago compounded the Red Bulls' misery. Nyarko found himself in space on the right to send a ball to Chris Rolfe for a tap-in. New York's six game unbeaten streak brought to an end.
