Description

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم wa-s-salaatu wa-s-salaamu 'alaa Rasulillaah sallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. In the name of Allaah, may Allaah send His peace and blessings upon Prophet Muhammad, his family, companions, and all those who follow them with righteousness until the last day Anwar Al 'Awlaki (rahimahullaah) speaks of the wives and kids of 'Umar Ibn Al Khattaab (radiAllaahu 'anhu) and the way the companions of prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) viewed and practiced marriage, divorce, and polygamy. Then he compares with today's sad condition in the muslim world, where the marriage has almost nothing islamic left to it, is made very hard when it is supposed to be simple. Like basically financially ruining men by asking very high mahr (dowry) that often men don't have, or is all the money they earned in their life. By this way millions of women will never get married because they won't find such rich men, and men as well. An account about Sahl bin Sa'd As Saa'idi in the books of authentic traditions tells about a Muslim woman who proposed verbally to the Prophet (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) himself. She told him: "I present myself to you". She then waited for quite some time while the Prophet sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam kept looking at her. A man said to the Prophet sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam: "If you don't need her please marry me to her". The Prophet (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) asked him: "Do you have anything to offer as dowry?" The man replied: "I don't have anything except this loin cloth". The Prophet (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) said to him: "If you give her your loin cloth you will remain without one, look for something else". The man said: "I can't find any". The Prophet (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) then advised him, "Try to find even an iron ring". He tried in vain. The Prophet (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) finally asked him: "Do you know anything from the Quran (learnt by heart)?" The man replied: "Yes, such and such Surah of the Quraan", and he named the Surahs. The Prophet (sallallaahu 3alaihi wa sallam) then declared: "I solemnize your marriage with her with whatever verses of the Quraan you have as dowry". [Related by Al Bukhaari and All Six Reporters of Tradition] Also some parents and women will only accept almost millionaire candidates with countless requirements and qualifications, which is a fool's paradise because most muslims in the world will never be like this or most who are are far from the religion and would mislead the family to misguidance. The criteria to marry someone must be how religious he/she is, as the Messenger of Allaah (sallallahu 'alayhi was sallam) said, "A woman is married for four things, i.e., her wealth, her family status, her beauty and her religion. You should marry the religious woman (otherwise) you will be a loser. " [Al Bukhaaree] And he said, "The whole world is a provision, and the best object of benefit of the world is the pious woman. " [Muslim] "When someone with whose religion and character you are satisfied asks to marry your daughter, comply with his request. If you do not do so, there will be corruption and great evil on earth. " [At-Tirmidhi] Other common problems includes extreme nationalism, to the point of some people accepting to marry people only from the same city. While Bilaal Ibn Rabah (radiallaahu 3anhu) who was an ethiopian slave, married the sister of 'Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Awf, daughter of Quraysh, the most noble arab tribe. [Taken from a fatwa of 'Ubayd Al Jaabiree] As well as many modern unislamic problems which stop lots of muslims from getting married early, or even getting married in their whole life, because of trying to immitate the kuffaar's way of getting married, which will never lead to anything good and no blessings from Allaah.
