Peak Season: Training For The Summit with Peter Whittaker

4y ago

At 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier is not just an icon of the northwest but also one of the biggest mountaineering challenges in the lower 48. Each summer between 8,000 and 13,000 climbers attempt the two-to-three-day climb, with the vast majority approaching the summit via Camp Muir and many following the lead of RMI, America's Largest Alpine Guide Service. A successful climb of Mt Rainier, guided or unguided, requires training and fitness as well as the cooperation of infamously fickle weather on the most glaciated American peak south of Alaska. In this alpine training series, First Ascent and RMI guides Ed Viesturs, Seth Waterfall, Peter Whittaker and Melissa Arnot share their advice on what it takes to train for and to ultimately summit Rainier.
