Short Video by Christian Counselor, Steve Rossi on Overcoming Evil with Good. A Biblical perspective. Encouraging the Christian Community. "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also. And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away." (Matt. 5:38-42) Turn the other cheek, give up your cloak, go the extra mile, and lend! Do not resist an evil person. Wow! Impossible. "Nothing is impossible with God." (Luke 1:37) "But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matt. 19:26) We are commanded not to repay violence with violence. No revenge. "No eye for an eye." We are to hold steadfast in our relationship with Christ. We must persevere in our faith, Christian values; and not shrink back in the face of overwhelming evil. The Better Way seems like a contradiction. It looks weak on the surface. Let evil people insult and sue us? It doesn't make sense. That's right. And that's God's Plan. His Ways are much higher than ours. Humility is power. Meekness is strength. God's Love and Goodness overcomes. Jesus is talking about personal insults not life threatening physical assaults here. He is not referring to individual or national self defense against visible, physical, enemies about to kill us. We must respond to physical danger or be murdered. God is not against nations and individuals defending themselves against annihilation. The Lord prefers peace but understands and allows acts of self preservation against wicked people trying to eliminate us. The U. S. had no alterna- tive to fighting W.W.II. The Israelites defended themselves against barbarian nations. Then there's spiritual warfare. We fight against principalities in high places not flesh and blood many times. The devil and his demonic forces come against us all the time. We are to put on the full armor of God and press the attack. We go on the offensive and defend against these evil entities. We hate what is evil, especially the devil, but not people. We hate the evil behind them. Jesus raises the standard here for dealing with insults, vile words against us, like slaps not death blows to our face. We are not supposed to resist these people. God will settle all things. The time for His reckoning and vengeance will come. We live in a fallen corrupted world. The Last Days. Put on your whole armor of God (Ephes. 6:11), pray spiritual warfare prayers, step out, trust God and let Him do His part. Don't fight back when you are insulted. Evil people expect a fight. When you do good to them in return, it forces them to reevaluate the situation. Your lack of resistance boggles and shatters their paradigm . Jesus had the power to going blow his adversaries apart. He did good instead. He loved. His power was revealed in His submission to the Father, leading to the cross. For Higher purposes. Which purpose do you serve today, self of Christ? World or Christ? Turn from self to Him. Don't resist Him. Let God's Driving Love guide you to do good. Repay insults with the love, kindness, and goodness of Jesus Christ today! "Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men." (Rom. 12:17) "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Rom. 12:21)
