Utilizando el Very Large Telescope de ESO en Cerro Paranal (Chile), astrónomos han descubierto una nube de gas, varias veces más masiva que la Tierra, acercándose rápidamente hacia el agujero negro que yace en el centro de la Vía Láctea. Esta es la primera vez que se logra observar el acercamiento irreversible de una nube a un agujero negro supermasivo.- Como parte de un programa de observación que lleva 20 años usando telescopios de ESO para monitorear el movimiento de las estrellas alrededor del agujero negro supermasivo que se encuentra en el centro de nuestra galaxia (ver noticia anterior) [1], un equipo de astrónomos dirigido por Reinhard Genzel, del Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) de Garching, Alemania, descubrió un nuevo objeto que se acerca rápidamente al agujero negro. Astronomers using ESO's Very Large Telescope have discovered a gas cloud with several times the mass of the Earth accelerating fast towards the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. This is the first time ever that the approach of such a doomed cloud to a supermassive black hole has been observed. The results will be published in the 5 January 2012 issue of the journal Nature. During a 20-year programme using ESO telescopes to monitor the movement of stars around the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy (eso0846) [1], a team of astronomers led by Reinhard Genzel at the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) in Garching, Germany, has discovered a unique new object fast approaching the black hole.
