Nicholas Wolfson Paintings At the Andre Zarre Gallery
3 months agoDescription
You can enjoy the pictures for their implied narrative about psychic and emotional disruption. In other words you may say to yourself, "Clearly there is something angry or dark or crazy going on in these paintings". It's as if they're illustrations of a story, or they contain a message. If that's what you see, that's valid. You can also enjoy the paintings for their obvious political commentary. It's not very sophisticated political commentary. The taunting is not very graceful. But it is wry, sardonic, ironic, cynical, and fun.... Don't get me wrong. Politics is an honorable calling, and some politicians are great. But there are also a good many total buffoons out there in the political world -- both at home and in foreign lands. I love these guys, these charlatans and these villans -- and we might just laugh them off, except for that they actually have real power in the world. You're also free to not understand anything about the paintings. Nothing says that art has to make sense. Maybe you'll find pleasure in their color and form and energy. Just relax, give each one a few moments of your attention, and "let them speak to you". The aim of these pictures is to please -- to give visual pleasure - and to make what is disturbing, attractive enough to contemplate with enjoyment.
