Miss Betty - UF Spotlight

4y ago

When Elizabeth Jones started to work at the University of Florida, gasoline was 25 cents a gallon, Harry S Truman was in the White House and one of the most popular shows on TV was "I Love Lucy." Here's one more thing to put things in perspective: Construction on Century Tower wouldn't begin until the following year. Known affectionately as "Miss Betty," Jones became a UF employee in September 1952, and she's still on the job, now as a receptionist at the UF Information Technology office in Turlington Hall. No one has worked at UF longer. Jones has seen plenty of change in the past six decades, but her devotion to students and to UF hasn't wavered. "I love the young people and I love my university," she said, adding that she has no plans to step down any time soon. Jones celebrates her 60th anniversary at UF; Queen Elizabeth celebrates 60 years on the British throne. Coincidence? You decide.
