http://www.ctvvancouverisland.ca http://www.facebook.com/ctvvi VICTORIA - Peter MacKay is making it a bit of a habit -- visiting CFB Esquimalt with cheque book in hand. On Thursday, the defence minister arrived at the base and announced $10.9 million in upgrades to pacific navy operations. Part of the money will pay for work that is already underway on a $1 million jetty that is the scene of so many mission and departures and arrivals. Close to $6 million will go to upgrade electrical and communications systems at the Rocky Point Ammunition Depot. Other projects include upgrades to the Canadian Forces Fleet School and the Combat - Electronic Work Centre. Mackay says the money is part of his government's plan to modernize the military. But the Defense Minister is not so sure about the modernization of the military's aging Sea King Helicopters. Construction on Vancouver Island is well under way on the hangers to house the replacement cyclones, but so far, Sikorsky, the aircraft's manufacturer has missed the June delivery deadline. Ottawa says the new helicopters could be delivered later this year. Follow Stephen Andrew on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/CTVNewsStephen
