Description
MAYDAY 2012 - Union Square, NYC OWS March and Protest May Day has always marked the coming of Spring - a time of rebirth and renewal along with the celebration of workers' rights worldwide. One must address, briefly, the history behind the date as a symbol of resistance against oppression by concentrated power in the hands of a privileged few. It originated as a commemoration for the victims of the Haymarket Massacre (1886) where the Chicago police were attempting to disperse a public assembly of workers during a general strike for the eight-hour workday. An unidentified person threw a bomb at the oncoming police causing them to fire into the unarmed protesters. Of course it took 51 years for the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act to make the Eight Hour Work Day the law of the land. With the recent passing of the May Day General Strike 2012 Protest another vigilant call for a renewal is being heard all over the United States of America. A call for addressing current grievances of declining union membership is at 11% of the American population, income inequity, fair housing, affordable healthcare for all, the recent hikes in student tuition fees, the extreme austerity measures for various social programs specifically for the elderly, poor people and children through direct action and establishment of general assemblies. Another prominent issue was Mayor Bloomberg's 'Stop-and-Frisk' policy which will allow the NYPD the unprecedented power to randomly search anyone suspicious in a particular neighborhood or as Matt Taibbi famously summed it up as "Let's have cops feel up any nonwhite person caught walking in the wrong neighborhood" policy. Also one cannot forget the rank abuses of the ongoing War on Certain Drugs along with the current Drone Wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan. So take a glimpse of what we at the New World Orgasm experienced at Union Square, New York City on May Day and come to your own conclusions outside the Corporate Media Noise Machine.
