Description

As I've confessed, I have a pretty strong interest in the Bloomsbury Group, particularly Old Bloomsbury, the inital flowering of this literary and artistic phenomenon. I've uploaded the only record of the voice of Virginia Woolf - a broadcast she gave at the BBC 1937, in which she considers various aspects of the English language (such as whether meaning can reside in a dictionary) and the process of writing itself. And I've uploaded film of Leonard Woolf, husband of Virginia Woolf, talking about the mind of one of the most important C20 economists and fellow Bloomsbury Group member, John Maynard Keynes. And uploaded film and separate audio of E M Foster at Cambridge University talking about the business of writing for the BBC's 'Monitor' program. This here is an audio of Leonard Woolf speaking about the formation of the initial Bloomsbury Group, and making a critical appraisal of his wife, Virginia - their relationship, her character and her genius. The talk was broadcast in the BBC programme, 'The World of Books' which aired on the 23rd May 1964.
