Hi Anna! Hi Philly! Here's are Top 10 Ideas for Our Ideal Kitchen! #10 - New Countertops - Our house was built in 1959 or there abouts, and the kitchen is pretty much in it's original state. The vinyl of the countertops is peeling off and any sort of household repairs are simply too difficult for my husband who suffers from multiple sclerosis. #9 - Appearance of a larger Space - there is one small wall that jets out and separates the dining room from the kitchen. We would love to either remove the wall, or create a service area/breakfast nook. #8 - Flooring - Our floors are covered in (cheap) linoleum. They are covered in deep dents and scratches. To wash I need to get down and scrub by hand. #7 - Storage Space - There is very little storage space in our kitchen, and all of the cupboards are stuffed to the rim. #6 - New Refrigerator - Our refrigerator is about 10+ years old. Works fine, however it's too small. We are a family of 5 and we cook from scratch - we do not own a microwave and do not buy pre-packaged frozen foods. Our food is filled to the brim with fruits, veggies, and left-overs! We have a second refrigerator downstairs to handle the overflow! #5 - Oven - As you can see, we do not own a microwave - which is fine by the way - however we have a stove which is approx. 10 yrs old, and a nice sized countertop convection oven. Cooking from scratch we usually have both ovens going at the same time. Especially for my children's birthday parties where I usually host a dinner with our immediate family of 20 people. #4 - Safety - Again, our kitchen cabinets are original issue, 1959 or so. As we open and close the drawers it fills the drawers and cupboards below with sawdust! Yuck. Our general rule is, when we take something out of the drawer or cupboard we need to wash it again. (Especially tough without a dishwasher!). The other issue is our stove. The children need to climb the counter to reach items in the pantry, and the counter they climb is right beside the stove. I am constantly reinforcing to them to be careful not to touch the stove as you don't know if it is still hot. #3 - New Kitchen Cabinets - As mentioned above, we have a saw dust issue which is not only a safety concern, it is really quite embarassing when we have guests! The kitchen cupboards are corroding, and paint chips are ending up in our dishes. Once again, all dishes and cups need to be thoroughly inspected, and wiped down to ensure paint chips do not end up in our mouths! Another issue, is that some of the cupboard doors are wilted and do not close without considerable effort. #2 - A Dishwasher - As a working mother and primary supporter of the family, I'm finding I am forever doing dishes! Of course, the state my kitchen is in now, there's no way I could even think of installing one without some sort of reno. The kitchen is too small and I cannot affort to lose any cupboard space. Dishwasher would certainly come in handy for the children's birthday parties when I am hosting dinner for our family of about 20 or so! #1 - Accessibility - My husband has had multiple sclerosis for 20 years now, and we are thankful that he is not in a wheelchair full-time! However, he does get around with a walker - one that also has a seat. When he is in the kitchen, doing dishes or preparing dinner, he needs to sit on his walker. This makes these simple tasks more difficult as the counter height is not correct for his position. Would love to have a kitchen that is more conducive for someone with a disability. Well...there you have it! Thank you so much for your consideration! Ciao Anna and Philly! Hope to hear from you real soon!
