Description

Eli and Jack. Hanging out in Eli's bedroom. Drinking beers, riffing on Star Trek, music and girls. The death of their friend sparks a journey to Jerusalem, and the bedroom becomes a car, the North Island and James K. Baxter's grave. The Intricate Art of Actually Caring is the story of two young guys embarking on a road trip that becomes a spiritual journey to James K. Baxter's grave in remote Jerusalem, New Zealand. This slacker road trip story weaves witty banter and poetic ramblings with Hamlet-like probings of masculinity, mortality and growing up. Hip, funny and moving, it won "Best Theatre" in the NZ and Dunedin Fringe Festivals as well as "Most Original Production" at the 2009 Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards. It has been performed all over New Zealand in Auckland, Hamilton, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Wellington. Written by Eli Kent Directed by Eleanor Bishop Starring Jack Sergent-Shadbolt and Eli Kent Designed by Erin Banks & Heleyni Pratley Lighting Design by Rachel Marlow Produced by The PlayGround Collective A work of extraordinary wit, perspicacity and humanity (John Smythe, Theatreview) Overall I cant put it better than to say I loved itthe highlight of the Fringe (Helen Sims, The Lumière Reader) "A stunning success: a young and highly talented playwrights road trip meditation on life, death, and the whole damned thing. Kent and fellow actor Jack Shadbolt are terrific. It's hip, funny and moving" (Laurie Atkinson, The Dominion Post) www.intricateart.co.nz
