With Hugh Jackman beginning production on The Wolverine and the X-Men: First Class sequel set to start filming in January with the reported subtitle "Days of Future Past", it got us wondering what the chances of seeing Jackman return for the sequel in a much more expanded role? Wolverine is arguably one of the most popular X-Men characters around, let alone one of the most popular superheroes, period. His cameo in X-Men: First Class was an unexpected highlight and despite the lackluster response to 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we're extremely excited for next year's sequel. With reports seemingly confirming the X-Men: First Class sequel will be at least loosely based on the Days of Future Past storyline from the comics, an expanded appearance by Jackman seems likely. For those of you not familiar, Days of Future Past was a storyline that featured a future version of Kitty Pryde transferring her mind to her younger self in order to recruit the present day X-Men from stopping an event that would trigger anti-mutant hysteria which leads to mutants being hunted down and killed or thrown into internment camps. The potential of this storyline, if it in fact becomes the plot of the sequel, could be huge and help bridge the gap between the 1960's setting of X-Men: First Class and the present day team from the original films. In the comics, Wolverine plays a key role in the storyline and seems a likely candidate to bring back, especially for the "future" timeline, which would most likely be our present day - if that makes any sense. Again, the Days of Future Past storyline or subtitle have yet to be confirmed, but we're definitely on board and think it's the perfect way to help create a continuity among the X-Men films and potentially lead to a continuation in the planned X-Men 4 movie. With Jackman already in Wolverine mode for the January start of the First Class sequel, it seems like the stars are aligned for at least another cameo if not an expanded role. But what do you think?
