Description
Nearly 40,000 people die in India every year because of Leukemia, Thalassaemia or other severe blood related diseases. Bone marrow transplant is the only ultimate cure. Majority of these patients do not find matching donor within the family. Thus, unrelated bone marrow transplant is the only option. Normally chances of matching are more in the same ethnicity. Unfortunately, in India, in spite of very large population the number of voluntary marrow donors is very low. Marrow Donor Registry (India) have taken up this challenge. They plan to recruit 1 million voluntary donors within the next 9 years or less. The cost of this will be over 100 million US dollars (5000 million Indian Rupees). Government has many and more pressing issues to deal with. Hence, instead of waiting for government support, Marrow Donor Registry (India) has decided to seek support from general public and give a brighter tomorrow for these patients.
