Peter Jackson gets his wish for a trilogy -- and fans are left wondering whether the news is a blessing or a curse. 'The Hobbit,' J.R.R. Tolkien's prequel to his high fantasy saga 'The Lord of the Rings,' follows half-pint Bilbo Baggins on his adventures in Middle Earth. Tolkienites have been anticipating the inevitable big-screen 'Hobbit' adaptation for nine long years, and this December our patience will finally be rewarded. But rumors have been swirling around director Peter Jackson's recent Comic-Con comments, where he hemmed and hawed over what to do with all the extra footage he shot for his two-film adaptation. Now the rumors are confirmed: 'The Hobbit,' already split once into two films, will be split again, into three. An official announcement posted on Jackson's Facebook page states that he and his collaborators feel that "much of the story of Bilbo Baggins...will remain untold if we do not take this chance." He explained to Deadline that since Tolkien wrote 'The Hobbit' before developing the wider mythology that informs 'Lord of the Rings,' he later looked to revise the first novel and wrote an appendices detailing his plans for expanding on the original story. Jackson believes his adaptation requires three installments because "We haven't just adapted The Hobbit; we've adapted that book plus great chunks of his appendices and woven it all together." The final film aims for a summer 2014 release and recent domain name purchases suggest that the title may be "Riddles in the Dark" or "The Desolation of Smaug," although Collider believes part three will be called "There and Back Again," with part two taking on one of these new titles. Reaction to the news has been mixed, with many excited for an extra trip to Middle Earth, but others concerned that the 310-page book -- 435 pages if you count the appendices that Jackson mentioned - doesn't hold enough material for a trilogy. For comparison's sake, the 'Lord of the Rings' novels total 1,570 pages - granted, those movies were all three-and-a-half-hour monstrosities, and there's no word yet on how long any of the 'Hobbit' films will be. But don't forget that Jackson's last two features, 'The Lovely Bones' and 'King Kong,' were each 3+ hours in length, and, though beloved by many fans, were widely regarded as bloated and overlong.
