Description

A clip of just under three minutes of one of the coolest art installations we've ever seen in Washington, D.C.: Doug Aitken's SONG 1, projected on to the exterior of the Hirshhorn's cylindrical building on the south side of the National Mall. (The Hirshhorn is opposite the National Archives, between the Smithsonian Castle and the National Air and Space Museum.) The outdoor show, which runs in a continual loop of just over half an hour, will continue nightly from sunset to midnight through 13 May. But don't worry if you won't have a chance to come to the nation's capital to see it: the piece itself will become part of the Hirshhorn's permanent collection. The piece opens with video of what looks like a textile factory, with the sounds of manufacturing roaring. Then, around 1:13, the first bars of "I Only Have Eyes for You" pierce the din of the machinery, and the piece becomes a sort of duet between two factory workers.
