New Jersey resident John "Gungie" Rivera started the Cristian Rivera Foundation after his six-year-old son Cristian lost a two-year battle with DIPG. There are 200-300 cases of DIPG diagnosed in the United States alone each year, primarily in children between the ages of 1 and 9. The median survival rate for a child diagnosed with DIPG is only 3-18 months and, to date, there are no known survivors. Since its inception, the Cristian Rivera Foundation has donated $150,000 to the pioneering FDA-approved clinical trials of Dr. Mark Souweidane of Memorial Sloan Kettering and Weill Cornell Medical Center, and the foundation announced this year that they will begin supporting the laboratory of Duke University's Dr. Oren Becher, who uses donated DIPG tumor tissue to recreate the tumors in mice and study both their makeup and their reaction to various treatments.
