Description

"Collisions" is a work by the Delta Project, a new melbourne-boun dance theatre company, that is built of Deaf and hearing dancers. The project brings together choreographers, Jo Dunbar (U.K) and Jodie Farrugia (Melbourne) to begin a work that will be shared in it's first stage at Deakin University in mid June 2012. The work explores the concept of "Collisions"; On the surface, no identifiable difference but in our daily lives the gap is exposed. It is not a reflection on disability/ability but on how any two worlds separated by a language barrier, experience and ways of living come together. In the merging of two cultures, we explore the effects of when two worlds collide. What are the consequences/ripple effects? What relationships form? What emotions emerge? how we move together to find the balance, the common ground, from where we all stand. Developing working methods that work with the different language needs of the dancers, through the medium of sign language, speech and non verbal communication, the company brings a new concept to the dance community, in exploring ways of communicating the tasks, breaking through barriers which were previously there, enabling a unique working model that can be applied across the board in dance and theatre practices. Working with a sound designer, a light designer and visual artist, the company explore different notions of presenting the work so that it will be accessible to a deaf audience as well as the mainstream hearing community. At the showings, there will be opportunities to be involved in a question and answer session with the creative team and the dancers about the development of "Collisions" and the studio methods which have arisen throughout the challenges and successes of the bring this work to this stage. It will be showing of the first stages of work, a sharing before it takes the next stage into a full length work. There will also be an exhibition in the foyer of Deakin Theatre, by Pippa Dodds, of the visual creative process.
