There are some things you can do. Hair loss is a natural part of aging—and it affects both men and women. But, that fact alone isn't going to boost your self-confidence. Hair loss can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition, like hypothyroidism or a vitamin deficiency. So, if you've noticed an abrupt change in your hair, especially if accompanied by other symptoms, see you doctor to make sure your thinning hair isn't due to a medical condition. If your hair loss is just a part of you getting along in years, what to do? The first, and safest option is to embrace it and go with hairstyles that can work for thinning hair. If you are a man, and baldness runs in your family, you might want to go with the bald look. If you're a woman and noticing thinning, you might want to experiment with a short cut. Wigs and hair-weaves are another option. You can explore a variety of options. You can also consider hair transplant procedures, but these can be expensive and sometimes painful. Some supplements and medications can help. For example, a deficiency of biotin, one of the B vitamins, can lead to hair loss. In some people, taking biotin (which is an over-the-counter supplement) can strengthen and even help drive new hair growth. You can also talk to your dermatologist about the medications minoxodil and finasteride to see if these might be appropriate for you to try. Whatever you choose, stick with the treatment for at least six months to judge whether you get results. Sources: Male Pattern Baldness. Bethesda, MD: MedLine Plus, 2009.
