Nato a Bari il 12 luglio 1982, fa il suo debutto in serie A nel 1999 a soli 17 anni (Bari-Inter 2-1). Quel giorno Fantantonio incanto' tutti i calciofili segnando un gol da cineteca. Attaccante capace di giocare come seconda punta e trequartista, ama giocare su tutto il fronte d'attacco cercando sempre l'ultimo passaggio filtrante per i suoi compagni. Dopo aver deliziato i tifosi della Roma, approda alla corte di Fabio Capello nel Real Madrid. L'esperienza con le meregues dura solo un anno, e cosi Fantantonio decide di tornare in Italia firmando per la Sampdoria. Con i blucerchiati Cassano diventa un assoluto protagonista e trascina i suoi compagni alla conquista della qualificazione in Champions league nella stagione 2010/2011. Tuttavia, il rapporto tra il talento barese e il patron Garrone col tempo si deteriora permettendo al Milan di assicurarsi le prestazione del giocatore.
