The former UN Secretary General, Annan accepted the position over 17 months ago thinking he could head the international community to end the conflict in Syria, transforming their government. But in recent weeks he has felt unsupported in his efforts, and will not tread this ground alone. His mandate will end on the 31st of August, and at that point a replacement envoy will be needed. Annan is working personally on finding a suitable replacement.
