A team of researchers deployed this summer to investigate a possible lead in the female pilot's legendary disappearance is returning with few answers, after exploring the remote island of Nikumaroro near Hawaii. The lead in the mystery was a photo of a stretch of beach on the small island, taken just three months after female record-breaking pilot Earhart failed to complete her round-the-world flight in 1937. The photo appeared to show a part of what the group of researchers thought could be Earhart's Lockheed Electra landing gear sticking out of the water. But underwater searches conducted around the island in recent weeks did not deliver any obvious wreckage. The team says some analysis of sonar and high-definition camera footage taken around the island remains to be completed, but for now, enthusiasts may have to settle for some Earhart Google doodle-age—the search engine salutes the pilot's 115th birthday today.
