In het grote Haaienbassin in het Oceanium van Diergaarde Blijdorp zwemt sinds nov. 2011 een grote school haringen rond. Het betreft circa 2400 zogenaamde 'valse' haringen ('vals' in de betekenis van 'onecht'), afkomstig uit het Caribisch gebied. Nog niet eerder was in Blijdorp zo'n grote school vissen te zien... Since Nov 2011 a large shoal of 2,400 false herrings is now swimming in the large shark tank of Rotterdam Zoo. Like a dance group they are continuously wheeling, changing places all the time. The same as they always do in the wild. We use the name 'false herring' to point out the difference between the herring that is found in the North Sea (Clupea harengus) and the herring swimming in the Atlantic Ocean (Harengula clupeola).
