Fantastic Creatures from the British Museum 2012.01.20 -- 04.11 Special Exhibition Gallery (2/F) Hong Kong Museum of Art Jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Trustees of the British Museum Jointly organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and the British Museum Fantastic creatures have fascinated human beings throughout time and around the world: fabulous, extraordinary beings that may threaten or help us, that may be good or evil. The exhibition Fantastic Creatures from the British Museum features 170 artefacts spanning several centuries, from the Paleolithic to the present day and across different cultures and civilizations. From the Greek minor god Pan, the Greek Gorgon Medusa, the Egyptian Sphinx, the Chinese dragon and qilin, the Japanese tengu, Medieval creatures, the unicorn, to prints by European masters including Rhinoceros by Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) and Femme torero by Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973), they are significant objects that cover the wide spectrum of the British Museum's cultural, geographic and chronological spread. The exhibition is structured into 9 sections to examine how animals and creatures address many fascinating questions and ideas, such as what lies beyond the visible horizon, how humans make sense of the world and explain its mysteries and dangers, the human relationship with the animal kingdom, the nature of good and evil, and what it means to be human.
