Piazza San Marco, Venice (Italy) - September 25th, 1976 After the end of their fantastic American tour, Paul McCartney and his band Wings started their second European tour of the year at Stadthalle in Vienna on 19th September. On 25th September 1976, Paul McCartney returned in Italy after 11 years (he played in Milan, Genoa and Rome with The Beatles in June 1965) for only a concert at the famous Piazza San Marco in Venice. This was a charity gig organized by the city council and supported by UNESCO as a fundraiser to help save the foundation pilings of the city and to slow down the city's sinking into the sea. A series of concerts were organized throughout the summer with Wings' visit being the biggest. The set-list is identical to the one played on the previous tour of North America (except for "Go Now" - it wasn't performed on this show) so there are no surprises, but the performance is much more enthusiastic than the final date in Los Angeles. Wings played a 'special' version of "Richard Cory": Denny Laine sang a very spirited "Richard Cory",version of this song saying he wished he could be "Casanova" instead of John Denver, and how Cory really gave to the "charities of Venice". After the "Soily" encore, the laser lights shown on the red brick tower at the opposite end of the square from the stage and converged into Wings' 'W' emblem. The event raised $50,000 for the city of Venice.
