I must've been 9 or 10 years old at the time. A friend and I were having a conversation about how rich we thought the president (the first George Bush) was. "I bet he's a millionaire" I said. "The president doesn't get paid that much. He makes less than a million dollars a year" he answered. -From there the conversation quickly turned to how rich the richest person in the world was. "Maybe he has a hundred million dollars, or 100 billion." I said. Then he said " When I grow up, I'm going to have a googol dollars..." -What was a Googol? I had never heard that word before. So I asked and he told me. "A googol is a 1 with 100 zeros after it. On second thought" he said "When I grow up, I want to have a googol-plex dollars. That's a one with a googol zeros after it." -Now, I was born a skeptic. Googol wasn't a word and it certainly wasn't a number. He had to be just making that up, and I told him so. After all, all the large numbers I had ever heard ended with -illion. Googol sounds made up! Who would name a number "googol?" - Well, as it turned out a 9 year old boy did just make up the word googol. But it was a different boy than the one I was arguing with. The word was made up by 9 year old Milton Sirotta in 1938 and popularized by his mathematician uncle Edward Kasner. -My friend proved it to me that day. His parents had a large video tape collection alphabetized in a walk-in-closet and among them was a recorded-from-TV tape of Cosmos episodes. This is what he showed me...
