Description

English/Nat London Fashion Week kicked off on Saturday with big name designers like Vivienne Westwood showing their collections. Also exhibiting was Matthew Williamson, who burst onto the British fashion scene last season - this year he showed colorful silks and cashmere knits. A record number of foreign buyers has converged on London to see the shows of 50 top British designers at its biggest fashion week to date. British fashion grande dame Vivienne Westwood colourful show was one of the first of London Fashion week which started on Saturday. The collections are looking ahead to end of this year for the autumn/winter of 98/99. Westwood's Red Label makes use of sparkling lurex, printed flannel and velvet stretch. For daytime, colours are earthy in black, mustard and brown. The look mixes tailoring with fitted pencil skirts and wide legged trousers and the shoes are white with a formal heel and an exaggerated toe. Sharp, clean accessories in white or gold finish off the look. And as always - Westwood's trademark tartan made an appearance - this time in a wrap around skirt. Westwood, as usual, won audience approval and clearly enjoyed her own turn on the catwalk. Matthew Williamson, who last year won international acclaim with his first collection, was also showing. This season the international media and buyers crammed into a small venue to see his latest creations. And they weren't disappointed with the 26-year-old's latest collection. The trend was elegant - streamlined dresses and skirts decorated with beads and embroidery. Besides decoration, Williamson's other passion is strong colour. This year Rolling Stone Mick Jagger's daughter Jade was on the catwalk. After the show Williamson spoke about the inspiration behind the collection.
