Protesters led by opposition leaders marched uphill to Sofiyska Square brandishing posters demanding 'Free Yulia' and 'Reforms and Order". They then gathered for speeches where boxing champion Vitali Klitchko drew loud cheers from the crowds. The former Soviet Republic currently stands divided between forging closer ties with the EU or Russia. A summit meeting of the European Council is set to entrench Ukraine in the Western bloc with a trade pact which will strengthen economic cooperation and grant Ukraine better access to the EU internal market. On May 15 the EU Commission issued a statement that the agreement will be signed only if Ukraine edges towards reform, creating 'political circumstances' ripe for democracy. The imprisonment of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko has drawn criticism from the West, now threatening to destabilise the deal. With crisis engulfing Western economies, Ukraine could yet move away from the European ideal.
