Description

Built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu the Atago Shrine sits on the highest land point in Tokyo. It's a little hard to imagine now with all the surrounding skyscrapers but back in the day the shrine was used by firefighters to keep watch on the city. The prominent feature of the Atago Shrine are the 86 stairs known as the Shussei no Ishiden, or "Stone Steps to Success." The legend has it that a young samurai warrior wanted to impress the Shogun with his bravery by riding his horse up and down the stairs. The Shogun was so impressed that the young samurais future was secured. To this day many Japanese people will visit the shrine to climb the stairs to wish for a little success in their life from the Gods above. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS ABOUT JAPAN: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=gaijinpot FIND US ONLINE AT: Facebook • http://facebook.com/GaijinPot Google+ • https://plus.google.com/+gaijinpot Twitter • http://twitter.com/GaijinPot Pinterest • http://pinterest.com/gaijinpot/ WORKING IN JAPAN: Jobs in Japan • https://jobs.gaijinpot.com Career Resources • http://injapan.gaijinpot.com/resources/ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
