Description

Ottawa, ON (Sept. 11/08)- The Executive of the Board of Governors met to decide on the proposed suspension of Prof. Denis Rancourt. With two particularly interesting points: 1) The action in question was criticizing the university. 2) Rancourt was barred from defending himself. ***uofowatch.blogspot.com*** The University claims in multiple documents to strive for complete transparency and inclusion in its governance, yet when Rancourt arrived to insist on his inclusion and on the public nature of the meeting, he was met with a locked door and unfriendly security entourage. ***uofowatch.blogspot.com*** The criticism in question can be found on Rancourt's blog, uofowatch.blogspot.com. The site is a great source for students, staff, media and community members who wish to find out more about the governance of the University. The UofO administration sees this as a threat and has put forward a series of actions to try and shut it down, the latest being this proposed suspension for using pictures from the University's own website in a manner which does not reflect "positively" on the institution. ***uofowatch.blogspot.com*** Universities are public institutions. When they seek to shut up those who crticize them, when they seek to stop the public from putting faces to the names who make the decisions (by banning the use of their photos). That is censorship and must be opposed. ***uofowatch.blogspot.com*** Freedom of expression is the garden from which all other freedoms burst.
