Description

Africa Sports - under the blaze of the Lagos morning sun, Nigeria's boxers are working up a sweat. Hitting large, beat-up boxing bags, training pads and each other - they are vent their frustration, anger and hopes. "The facilities are okay but the training is hard," says Mariam, a female boxer, wiping the sweat from her brow. The boxing club is run by Mr Seidu since 1981 and he has helped train boxers in America as well, but the sport is not as popular now as when he first started: "Boxing was the number one sport," explains Mr Seidu. "But the training facility in the stadium is not serious." Perhaps Nigeria's most famous and successful boxer was Samuel Okon Peter, nicknamed the "Nigerian Nightmare" who was the WBC heavyweight champion. The best Africa sports boxer is often regarded as Azumah Nelson - a Ghanaian three time world champion in both feather weight and super feather weight weigh classes; in 1998 Nelson retired. In northern Nigeria, traditional Dambe boxing is done with no gloves and only one hand wrapped in a hard cloth. It is extremely dangerous. So instead, Mr Seid sets up his own gym in the car park of the National Stadium in Surulere where students can pay up to 3000 Naira for training. Men typically do rounds of 3 minutes, while his female students go for 2.30 minutes. Our presenter - Olukayode puts on a pair of gloves to get involved in one of the toughest Africa sports - and chai - he don try oooo! But he soon tire - maybe it's his traditional clothes! But as Mr Seidu advises him : "The more you train, the more you fight!" **** CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE FOR NEW BATTABOX VIDEOS EVERYDAY: http://goo.gl/vJfFY ...
