http://davidlynchfoundation.org: In this interview from David Lynch Foundation Executive Director and Transcendental Meditation (TM) teacher Bob Roth's Sirius XM radio show "Success Without Stress," Dr. Norman Rosenthal and Dr. Pamela Peeke discuss the science behind TM and how it can help at-risk populations all over the world who suffer from traumatic stress. Dr. Norman E. Rosenthal is the world-renowned psychiatrist and author whose research in describing seasonal affective disorder (SAD) has helped millions of people. His 2011 book Transcendence was a New York Times bestseller, and his latest book, The Gift of Adversity, was a Los Angeles Times bestseller. Dr. Pamela Peeke is an internationally recognized expert, physician, scientist and author in the fields of nutrition, stress, fitness and public health. Dr. Rosenthal: “There are now two studies that show that your chances of getting a heart attack or a stroke within the next 10 years are reduced by about 25% if you meditate. I often say to people, I would take castor oil twice a day if it reduced my risk of heart attack and stroke by 25%. But this is not castor oil, this is a wonderful process that enriches my day and the day of millions of people. So, there are tons of reasons: live longer, live better, those are the two best reasons.” Dr. Peeke: “I thought, ‘I don’t have time for this, I don’t even have time to breathe; I have to schedule breathing!, How am I possibly going to wedge in a moment or two of what we are calling this blissful transcendent moment?’ “Well, if you did take a moment and take 20 minutes to meditate, you would have fewer things on the to-do list and the ones left, you would do better. TM fit like a perfect fitting shoe.” Dr. Rosenthal: “Not all meditations are the same. Transcendental Meditation: that word 'transcendental' is not accidental. It refers to the state of transcendence: a profound state of consciousness that is absolutely specific to this kind of meditation. You slip into a state where your body is very much at rest; slows down, breathing slows down, and you’re very alert, but you’re very calm at the same time.” Tune into "Success Without Stress" the last Friday of every month at 7pm ET on Sirius XM Indie.
