The singleplayer campaign for Rise of the Samurai features 3 clans: Minamoto, Taira and Fujiwara. As for Fall of the Samurai, the clans are split into 2 factions: The Shogunate and Imperial. The Shogunate clans are: Jozai, Aizu and Nagaoka, while the Imperial ones are: Satsuma, Tosa, Choshu and Saga. Real-time tactics and turn-based strategy blend together in Total War: Shogun 2, as the player plays the role of both clan leader and general, alternating between those unless he decides to auto-resolve the battles. As clan leader, the player gets to choose what kind of diplomatic actions, recruitment, constructions he wants to go for: whether he wants to set up a marriage, an alliance, declare war, or recruit land units such as loan sword ashigaru, bow samurai, katana samurai, no-dachis, naval units or others, as well as starting the construction of various buildings. Multiplayer is fairly complex as it includes both classic mode and avatar conquest. Classic mode allows players to choose the actual clans to fight with, while in avatar mode they can pick any units they wish and upgrade them using special clan token skills, past level 5. Those tokens are obtained via victories in the matchmaking system. Team battles are also present in this installment: up to 8 players can take part in a single battle (4v4), and spectators can also be had in the hosted lobbies. Unfortunately, the game suffers from imbalance at low to high levels, especially when players boost their avatar by going prestige.
