Description

These two adorable baby Gopher Tortoises [found at the nature center preserve] are now on display at Okeeheelee Nature Center in the Discovery Zone! Okeeheelee Nature Center is permitted through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) to house Gopher Tortoises. FWC requests that when hatchlings are found, they're brought inside and cared for several years until they are large enough that they would be able to survive in the wild without the fear of predation. Then, they will be released back into the preserve and will hopefully contribute to the success of the population! The Gopher Tortoise is a protected species, and it is against the law for people to have them without the proper permits.
