The pope met survivors and relatives of those who died in the shipwreck, which took the lives of 368 people. Thirty-seven of those who survived were present at the meeting in Vatican City. The tragedy took place October 3, 2013 when a boat filled with refugees sank off the coast of the island of Lampedusa. Francis, who has already lamented the plight of refugees before, said he was speechless, not able to find the words to comfort people who had faced such tragedy. Francis had visited Lampedusa before the October tragedy, holding a mass on the island.
