Description
Original broadcast of ABC's Monday Night Football from October 17th 1983 live from Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin. Frank Gifford and O.J.Simpson call the game. Game Summary The 95-point barrage remains the highest-scoring game in MNF history. The two teams combined for 1,025 net yards, 771 yards passing, 56 first downs, and five leads in the fourth quarter. Voted one of the ten best Packer games and is featured on the NFL Films collection, "The Green Bay Packers Greatest Games." Lynn Dickey threw for three touchdowns and tossed a 56-yard pass to Gerry Ellis to set up Jan Stenerud's 20-yard field goal with 54 seconds to play Monday night, giving the Green Bay Packers a 48-47 victory over Washington. The lead changed five times in the final 15 minutes, and Washington's Mark Moseley. who had kicked four field goals in the game, missed to the right a 39-yarder with three seconds to go. Dickey threw scoring strikes of 36 and nine yards to TE Paul Coffman and 31 yards to FB Mike Meade, the last one giving Green Bay a 45-40 lead with 7:37 remaining. Joe Theismann drove the Redskins 72 yards in nine plays, hitting Joe Washington for a five-yard TD pass with 2:50 left. It was Washington's second scoring catch of the game. But three plays after the ensuing kickoff, Dickey flipped his decisive pass to Ellis, who caught it in the right flat, broke away from a platoon of defenders and raced down the sideline before being caught at the Redskins eight. The Packers ran the ball into the line three times, running down the clock as well, before Stenerud came through. Dickey completed 22 of 30 passes for 387 yards in the game. Theismann completed 27 of 39 passes for 398 yards in one of the great shootouts in recent years. The Packers struck early as LB Mike Douglass recovered Joe Washington's fumble following a pass completion and sprinted 22 yards for a touchdown just 67 seconds into the game. The Redskins tied it with 4:25 gone when Riggins fumbled into the end zone and TE Clint Didier recovered for Washington. The six-play, 55-yard drive was highlighted by Theismann's passes of 34 yards to Art Monk and 14 yards to Charlie Brown. Green Bay went in front again at 10-7 with 6:34 remaining in the opening period on Jan Stenerud's 47-yard field goal, but Washington tied it again when Mark Moseley kicked a 42-yarder. The Redskins had a second-and-goal at the Green Bay 4 when Theismann was sacked sucessively by LB John Anderson and DE Ezra Johnson, pushing Washington back to the 24 before Moseley kicked. Green Bay went into the locker room at halftime leading 24-20 as Dickey threw touchdown passes of 36 and nine yards to Coffman. The Redskins' points in the period came on Riggins one-yard touchdown run and Moseley's 28-yard field goal. The 36-yard pass to Coffman came on the first play of the second quarter and capped a four-play, 74-yard drive.
