Description

Episode Two: www.thesignalpodcast.com/the-signal-p…ork-and-beef. In which Jill, Dan, and BlogHer's Elisa Camahort Page have a soulful discussion about Ferguson, the Eric Garner non-indictment, and the protests in Ferguson and New York City. Download Audio This week, a Staten Island grand jury did not indict NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo in the death of Eric Garner. Garner, an African-American father of six, died July 17 as the result of a chokehold by the officer. The whole thing was caught on video. With the lack of an indictment, protesters took to the streets this week in New York and around the country to demand change in the police and legal system. The issue of police brutality on black Americans, and more specifically white officers on black citizens, touches a lot of nerves: marginalized communities, systemic racial profiling, police aggression, civil liberties, white privilege, and on and on. How are we responding, on the streets, online, and in the media? Our guest for this conversation is Elisa Camahort Page, co-founder of BlogHer.com, now senior vice president at She Knows Media. She’ll explore her personal reaction to the Garner case and give voice to the conversations she’s participating in and witnessing on social media. Mentioned in this episode are the protests on behalf of Eric Garner in New York, an excellent radio piece by WNYC’s On The Media about cops and body cameras, The Signal is a weekly conversation about news, technology, and culture.
