The Newsroom Unintended Consequences 00:00 30 seconds back. 00:03 And here comes dinner. 00:05 - How you doing? - Good, thank you. 00:07 - Yeah, I got it. - I'm sorry? 00:09 I was talking to my producer. 00:11 - How do I look? - Good. 00:13 No, producer again. 00:15 - Is he just screwing with her? - Mm-hmm. 00:17 - Come on. - In three, two 00:20 It's been two weeks since a group of protesters 00:23 began camping out in Zucotti Park here in New York City. 00:26 The Occupy Wall Street movement has turned to social media 00:29 and held marches through the streets of the financial district. 00:32 Here in the studio today is one of the leaders 00:35 of Occupy Wall Street, Shelly Wexler. 00:36 - Don't take the bait. - Shelly, thanks for being with us. 00:38 It's good to be here, but I am not one of the leaders of OWS. 00:41 - We don't have leaders. - Is that a good idea? 00:43 - Not having leaders? - Yeah. 00:46 Yes, because this way, everyone's sure to have a voice. 00:48 Sounds like a lot of people talking at once. 00:50 But tell us in a few words what OWS is protesting. 00:53 We are protesting a variety of issues 00:55 The co-opting of the government by the rich, 00:57 the lack of any prosecution for the crimes 00:59 that led to the collapse of 2008, 01:01 Citizens United, social inequality. 01:03 So not any particular thing? 01:06 Not one particular thing. 01:08 You're protesting against lots of things? 01:10 The list of things we're protesting against 01:11 is as varied as the protesters themselves. 01:14 I've seen protesters holding signs that say, "We are the 99%." 01:17 - Yes. - I am the 1%. 01:19 Some people would say I'm overpaid, but I'm not. 01:22 I'm paid exactly what the market will bear, 01:24 which means I'm paid what I'm worth. 01:25 So which system would you replace capitalism with? 01:30 We wouldn't I wouldn't replace it with any system. 01:33 I would make the system fairer. 01:35 - By passing new laws? - Yes. 01:36 - It's Congress who does that. - Yes. 01:39 It's legislation like Dodd-Frank that the banks really fear, right? 01:43 Yes. 01:44 If your congressman or your senator 01:46 or the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee 01:48 or the Speaker of the House wanted to hear the demands 01:51 of OWS, who would they meet with? 01:53 We're not looking for a meeting. 01:55 - They wouldn't be able to meet with anyone, right? - Look 01:58 I'm trying to find the virtue of a leaderless movement 02:01 where everyone's voices are heard. 02:03 That isn't the point. 02:05 We want everyone to look at Occupy Wall Street 02:06 and ask themselves the question, "Why is this happening?" 02:09 I think that's been taken care of. 02:11 But what happens after people ask themselves that? 02:14 - Change, we hope. - How? 02:16 The same way change has always happened. 02:18 What is your best-case scenario for how this ends? 02:22 - That it doesn't end. - Oh, God. 02:25 - That it doesn't end? - That's right. 02:26 Even if you put the heads of the banks in jail, 02:28 overturn a Supreme Court decision, 02:30 ensure greater social equality and give everybody money, 02:33 you're still going to be sleeping in Zucotti Park? 02:35 Like most of the media, I don't think you're taking this seriously. 02:39 Is there any chance that's because you're not? 02:43 - Hey, it didn't go that badly. - Fuck off! 02:46 - Come on. - I am humiliated and in shock. 02:48 This whole thing is messed up 02:50 and he's a fucking asshole, by the way. 02:52 - He's not. - Trying to be funny at the expense of the guest. 02:55 I don't think it was as bad as you think. 02:56 Which way do I go to get out of here? 02:57 - You need to take me to the guy. - What? 02:59 - The guy in the park. - You think I'm disposed to doing you a favor? 03:02 No, Shelly.
