Description

Back in December, Hillview Concert Band played at a Veteran's dinner. The kids brushed up on patriotic tunes, and were thrown for a loop when the veterans requested 'Hymn to the Fallen' from the movie "Saving Private Ryan." The order was to tall to fill, and rather than butcher a beautiful composition, they gracefully declined the request. To the surprise of the veterans, they were asked to attend Hillview's final band concert this year so that the kids could finally fulfill their request. They practiced diligently at the hands of great leadership (feeling so blessed that my children have had the influence of Mr. B ... Probably one of the greatest TEACHERS I have ever had the pleasure of knowing) ... And man oh man! They knocked it out of the park! In a world where there is so much senselessness and disconnect, I felt it important to share something so simple, YET so profound, and it took place in a gym in some town ... It won't make the news, but the memory of watching a gentleman who fought at Pearl Harbor and one of the Air Force's first female pilots' face light up while MY DAUGHTER played trumpet will be impressed on my heart forever.
