Description

At least ten more Turkish tanks have crossed the border into Syria, a day after Ankara-backed militants took control of the northern Syrian town of Jarablus. The tanks are set to join a contingent of around a dozen tanks which were deployed earlier. Turkish officials say additional armored vehicles will be sent if needed. Ankara says the incursion is part of an operation against both Daesh and the Syrian Kurds. According to defense minister Ismet Yilmaz, the operation’s goal is to make Kurdish YPG fighters withdraw to the east of the Euphrates River in a week. Yilmaz added that Ankara didn’t ask for US support in the operation, but they are backing Turkish forces from air. The US Secretary of State has informed Turkish foreign minister that YPG fighters have started retreating to the east of the river. The Syrian government has slammed Turkey’s military operation, calling it a breach of Syria’s sovereignty.
