Hamilton Police Service Investigating Taxi Cab Robbery

Man Armed with a knife robs Taxi cab driver and steals vehicle On Monday May 25, 2015 at 6:30am police received reports that a taxi cab driver was just robbed and had his vehicle stolen by a man armed with a knife. It was indicated that a man was picked up in the area of 549 Barton Street East. The man indicated that he wanted to be driven to the area of James Street North and Murray Street. The man asked the driver to stop and pull over as they passed MacNab Street North close by. It was at the time when the driver stopped the cab in the area of Bay Street North and Stuart Street that he produced a knife and placed it near the driver’s right hip. The man demanded the driver turn over cash. The driver was able to unbuckle his seatbelt and flee from the vehicle safely before calling police. The man armed with the knife then proceeded to steal the cab and accelerate at a high rate of speed out of the area which may have been seen being driven erratically throughout the area by the suspect. Police were dispatched and investigators were immediately assigned to the case to investigate. Police located the abandoned taxicab in an alleyway in the area south of Cannon Street East between Emerald Street North and Tisdale Street North. Forensic investigators are processing the vehicle for evidence that may assist with the investigation. The driver was not injured during this robbery. Investigation is still ongoing at this time of release.
