Sometimes going off task just has to do with not being able to shut out noise effectively. Parents and teachers try to make things quiet for these kids to make it easier for them to stay on task, but since there are no perfectly quiet environments, my way of doing it differently is to train kids to work gracefully around the noise so they learn to take it in stride and don't get lost in it. They actually train to tolerate the distraction so it no longer bothers them. I think it is a better way to help them stay on track. Why do we want to train the child to only be able to function within a certain type of environment? Shouldn't we be training that child to handle more than just a quiet environment since trying to control all future environments will be impossible?
