Description

This is the moment Kate Middleton was almost knocked for six - when Prince William threw a cricket ball at her HEAD. The Duchess of Cambridge bravely stepped in to bat as the royal couple visited Christchurch to promote the cricket World Cup in New Zealand next year. Wearing three-inch heels and a striking red designer outfit, she might have expected her husband to give her an easy start. But William showed no interest in holding back, sending his first ball whizzing inches from her face. As the crowd whistled, the umpire stepped in and declared his effort a 'no ball'. Kate took the near-miss in good spirits, waiting patiently for a second chance which she managed to hit well. Former New Zealand batswoman Debbie Hockley, 51, said she gave Kate a few tips as she stood at the crease twirling her bat. "I told her don't worry about technique just smash it," said Debbie. "She was quite nervous but she kept her eye on the ball. "I thought they were great sports to take part in it. "I couldn't bat in high heels. "She's not played before so it's a pretty good effort and she did the best she could." Earlier, the royal couple had spent the morning meeting families of some the 185 people who lost their lives in the devastating earthquake that hit the city in February 2011. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/royal-tour-2014-watch-moment-3413324#ixzz2yrrBwO4G Follow us: @DailyMirror on Twitter | DailyMirror on Facebook Not Cricket! Kate Stumped By William Delivery The royal couple's sporting rivalry moves to the crease as they pay tribute to victims of Christchurch's devastating earthquake. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took their sporting rivalry to the cricket pitch during the latest leg of their tour of New Zealand and Australia in Christchurch. With the scores effectively tied after a yachting challenge and a game of "Rippa Rugby", the royal couple had no hesitation about taking to the makeshift crease in the city's Latimer Square. Despite being unsuitably dressed in a red Luisa Spagnoli skirt suit and three-inch heels, Kate was keen to bat first, watched by hundreds of spectators at the event promoting the 2015 Cricket World Cup. William unbuttoned his formal suit and briefly sought some advice from New Zealand cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee, before bowling a full toss that whistled past his shocked wife's ear - leaving all concerned relieved that the bats and balls being used were made of plastic.
