The Amish - 9pm, Monday 5 January on Sky 534 & Virgin Media 243 On October 2, 2006, 32-year-old milk truck driver Charles Roberts walked into the tiny one-room schoolhouse in the Amish community of Nickel Mines, Philadelphia, and shot 10 young girls, killing five, before turning the gun on himself. Within hours of the shooting, locals visited the gunman’s family to offer forgiveness. This remarkable reaction to a crime that shocked the world epitomises why outsiders are fascinated by the simple life of this religious community, still best known to many from the fictional Harrison Ford thriller Witness. Can their basic lifestyle, in which modern tools and technology are largely eschewed, stout faith and strong social bonds that still include communal feasts and barnraising parties really bring such peace of mind that forgiveness is so readily offered? Written and directed by British film-maker David Belton, this fascinating insight into the Amish community rewards more than a year of careful negotiations as the camera team gained the trust of the people, allowing them unrivalled access into the culture. But is the modern world finally starting to seep in? The film not only gives rare insight into traditional Amish life but meets the teens who are slowly awakening, despite restricted contact and influence, to the kind of existence enjoyed by others outside the narrow confines of their upbringing.
