Description

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) is entering final negotiations in Hawaii this week, and New Zealand is still seeking greater gains for the dairy industry. Waikato University professor of agribusiness Jacqueline Rowarth this morning joined Paul Henry to discuss how "dairy is going to be at the top of the agenda". Prof Rowarth says negotiations are likely to be fraught because "Canada is so protective of its dairy industry and so it doesn't want us playing in the same markets". "With Canada holding a tariff in excess of 300 percent on dairy, as well as subsidising its domestic market to reduce risks in the market place, excluding others playing in the same field and supporting its own farmers with direct income – it's a very protective market."
