Description

A zoo in southwest China installs a television to entertain a panda lonely after her companion was moved elsewhere. Full Story: When her companion was moved away from their zoo in southwest China last week, panda Sijia appeared dejected and depressed, and stopped eating properly, keepers said. So on Monday (April 14), worried staff at the Yunnan Wild Animal Park in Kunming city installed a television to entertain the lonely panda. "When Meixi had just left and Sijia went back to her cage, she wouldn't respond at all when keepers called to her. She just lay there silently. And when keepers tried to tempt her with food, she wouldn't pay any attention. She's generally greedy and eats a lot, but during that time she ate very little," said staff member Bai Tuo. "So we added a swing and bars to her enclosure to try and increase the amount that she exercised. And we also installed a television for her, so that she could see some video footage of when Meixi was in Yunnan. We also put a puppet of a panda in all of the places where she would hang around," he added. Sijia's companion Meixi was returned to her native Sichuan on March 31, making Sijia the only panda in the whole of Kunming city. According to a local Kunming paper, keepers played images of Sijia and Meixi playing together when they first arrived from Sichuan. "Today Sijia is in a much better state than before. When she comes out she naturally climbs on the swing and just starts swinging, and proactively climbs up on the bars. But if it had been in that period before, sometimes she would have just laid on the platform not moving at all," Bai said. Pandas, the rarest species of bear, reside primarily in bamboo forests high in the mountains of western China. About 1,600 pandas live in the wild, according to conservation organization WWF.
