Description

Roger Sessions: String Quartet No. 2 (1951) New Music Quartet: Broadus Erle, violin I Matthew Raimondi, violin II Walter Trampler, viola David Soyer, cello Recorded May 12, 1955, presumably in Columbia's 30th Street Studio, New York City. Issued in 1956 as Columbia ML-5105, coupled with Colin McPhee's Concerto for Piano and Wind Octet. This issue was still being listed in the Schwann Catalog as of September, 1970, but must have disappeared soon after, as the coupling was reissued in 1973 by Composers Recordings, Inc. (in fake stereo). The quartet, however, does not appear to have been reissued in any form. Roger Sessions' Second String Quartet, which is dedicated to Lorna and Rudolf Kolisch, is in five movements: 1. Lento 2. Allegro appassionato, alla breve (at 7:55) 3. Andante tranquillo (at 12:38) Var. I (at 14:04) Var. II: Un poco meno mosso (at 15:42) Var. III: Adagio molto (at 17:50) Var. IV: Piu mosso (at 20:05) Var. V: Tempo I (at 21:13) 4. Presto (at 22:50) 5. Adagio (at 27:10) Though the score of Sessions' Second String Quartet specifies that the movements are to be played without pause, this is not observed in the present recording; only the first two movements are joined.
