Description

Authorities continued to monitor the Ubinas volcano in southwestern Peru on Tuesday (April 15) after eruptions prompted officials to declare a state of emergency for nearby villages last Thursday (April 10). Technical Director of Peru's Institute of Geophysics, Jose Machare, said that while they have seen an increased level of volcanic activity, the levels have not exceeded those registered in the last major eruptions between 2006 and 2009. "Given the Ubinas volcano's eruption crisis, the government has already taken measures to declare a state of emergency for the surrounding communities. The recent activity shows an increase in the energy of the explosions and a greater height of the eruption column of gas and ash which rises more than four thousand meters according to the latest joint statement from the committee which is in charge of monitoring the volcano. However, this activity has not reached the levels that occurred in the last major eruption between the years 2006 and 2009," said Machare. Last week protective face masks were distributed to the affected areas to protect residents from potentially dangerous volcanic ash, while health brigades were sent in to supervise the water supply. Residents from the town of Querapi tried to sweep away layers of ash that had accumulated on the ground as a result of the eruptions and winds. Eruptions at the Urbinas Volcano, considered the most active in Peru, have been reported since 1550. http://www.theshortpenguin.com/
